My Writing Journey

How did I start my writing journey?

Storytelling has always been at the heart of everything I do. From creative writing and screenplays to magazine columns and children’s books, my journey has been driven by one simple passion: to bring ideas to life through words.

Reading and writing have always been part of who I am, both personally and professionally. One memorable moment came when I wrote a persuasive letter to Michael Eisner, then CEO of The Walt Disney Company. To my amazement, it led to a call from his executive producer asking for a treatment. At the time, I had no idea what a treatment was, but three months later I’d written one – complete with English countryside photographs showing the story’s setting. The exec enjoyed the photos but said they were “working on something similar.” No worries, by then, I was hooked. That experience lit a fire in me that’s never gone out.

Through my work as a graphic designer, and my love of food, I began writing a regular food and drink column for Aga Living magazine. My columns often included light-hearted, anecdotal stories to connect readers with whatever product or service I was featuring. I also wrote a short lifestyle column online.

To deepen my understanding of storytelling, I trained with Raindance, London, in screenwriting. Being a visual person, I’m always thinking about how scenes might look on screen, which might be a blessing or a curse, but it keeps things interesting! I’m currently having a great time writing screenplays.

Over the years, I’ve devoured countless books on writing and taken online courses to keep improving my craft. The BBC Maestro courses were particularly inspiring. Julia Donaldson’s course encouraged me to write several children’s picture book stories, one of which I self-published – now available on Amazon.

At the heart of everything, I just love to tell stories. Writing is my way of exploring, sharing, and connecting. If I can spend the rest of my life doing that for a living, I’ll be very happy indeed
